(COLDWATER) – An Indiana man has plead no contest to a stabbing incident in Southern Michigan.
Branch County Circuit Court officials say 39 year old Adam Wallis of Marion, Indiana, entered the plea to a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. In addition, a habitual offender sentencing enhancer was dropped by the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office.
On August 19, 2023 at 2:30 PM, Wallis was a passenger in his brother’s car, when he started yelling at a man driving a pick up west on U.S. 12 in Coldwater. Both vehicles stopped for a red light at the southbound ramps of I-69, when the altercation took place.
Police say Wallis got out of the car, stabbed the victim in the chest and then they fought in the street. Wallis reportedly threw the knife into a grassy field before getting back into his brother’s car. The victim told officers he thought Wallis was going to flee the scene, so he backed up his pickup in front of the car to prevent them from leaving.
Police say Wallis and his brother were in Coldwater visiting a marijuana dispensary before the altercation.
Wallis was arrested at the scene, and officers were able to recover the knife. The victim was taken by Life Care Ambulance to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital and was treated for his injuries.
A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for July 29.
