CLERMONT, Fla. – Debbie Hill and Alexis Michon both turned in stellar performances in the circle as the nationally top-ranked Trine University softball team swept another day of competition in Florida.
Game one saw the Thunder faceoff with Marian (Wis.) University and pick up a shutout victory. Neither team scored in the first two innings, but Trine broke up the stalemate in the bottom of the third. Emma Lee walked in her at-bat, before being brought home by a triple from Karley Trine. Macy Rocha followed quickly behind with an RBI-single followed in turn by Tyra Marcum with an RBI-double.
It was all the run support that Michon needed in the circle, who was nearly untouchable. She took a perfect game into the fifth, when the Sabre of the day reach base after being hit by a pitch. The no hitter lasted until the top of the seventh with two outs already recorded. In all she allowed just the two baserunners while striking out 13.
In the bottom of the sixth Trine added to their lead. Talisa Chafey tripled with two on base to make the score 5-0 and Lee followed up with a groundout that brought Chafey home. The 6-0 score would ultimately end up going final.
In the second game of the day, the Thunder made quick work of Alfred (N.Y.) University, ending the game in run-rule fashion after five innings with a score of 10-0.
The team served as visitors for the contest and scored quickly in their first at bats. Lee led off with a single and then eventually scored on a wild pitch. Marcum followed up with a solo homerun to make the score 2-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, Hill took to the circle for her stellar performance. She would pitch all five innings of the contest, taking a perfect game into the final inning. She ended up walking one to finish with a no hitter, the third of her young career.
The team executed a double steal play in the top of the second when Lee reached on a walk to put runners on the corners. Chafey scored on the play after the catcher failed to catch Lee at second.
Karley Trine and Marcum each brought in two runs on singles in the fourth inning, making the score 7-0 heading into the fifth. The team finished off the run-rule victory with Emma Beyer and Marcum each bringing in runs. Marcum ended up with a monster game, going three for three with five RBIs and a walk.
Trine improves to 10-1 overall following the pair of wins. They will finish their spring break slate of games tomorrow, Saturday, March 9. They are set to face UMass Dartmouth at 9 a.m. and 19th-ranked Lebanon Valley College at 11:15 a.m. Both teams reached the NCAA Division III Softball Championship last year, representing a tough final day for the team.
