(LANSING) - The Michigan Attorney General's office is urging residents to stay alert to the warning signs of identity theft during Identity Theft Awareness Week.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person's personal information -- such as Social Security numbers or credit card details -- without permission. Officials say the crime affects thousands of Michigan residents each year and can lead to serious and long-lasting financial damage.

The Attorney General's office highlighted several common warning signs, including missing mail, unexplained bank withdrawals, unexpected bills or credit denials, and unfamiliar accounts appearing on credit reports.

To reduce the risk of identity theft, officials recommend using credit cards instead of checks, shredding sensitive documents with a micro-cut shredder, and regularly reviewing credit reports. Residents may also consider enrolling in credit monitoring services for added protection.

To assist victims, the state has launched the Michigan Identity Theft Support System, which provides tools and guidance for recovering from identity theft and restoring financial security.
