Struggling With Heating Bills? Michigan Credit Could Help

(JACKSON) - As winter cold drives up energy costs, Consumers Energy is urging customers to take advantage of a state tax credit that could help offset heating bills.

The Michigan Home Heating Credit -- worth nearly $200 on average -- is available to households earning up to 110% of the federal poverty level, about $35,365 annually for a family of four.

Utility officials say outreach is focused on customers most at risk of falling behind on payments. The company has also donated $5 million to nonprofit agencies that provide direct bill assistance.

Eligible residents do not need to file a full income tax return to claim the credit, formally known as MI-1040CR-7. The funds can be applied to heating expenses from the previous year.

To help residents apply, Consumers Energy recommends dialing 2-1-1 to find free tax preparation services through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites.

The utility is also proactively contacting customers hit hardest by high winter bills to offer payment plans and advice on reducing energy use.

More information about available assistance programs can be found on Consumers Energy's website.

With cold weather continuing across Michigan, officials say applying for available aid now could prevent larger financial strain later in the season.
