(CORUNNA) - Authorities say a body discovered in a marshy area of DeKalb County last Friday has been identified as a missing Michigan woman whose death has been ruled a homicide.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office responded around 11:18 a.m. Feb. 13 to the 2100 block of County Road 17 near Corunna after a local resident reported finding a body lying in the snow. Deputies located the deceased woman a short distance off the roadway in a marshy area.
Investigators later identified the victim as 35-year-old Shana M. Umbreit of Harbor Beach, Michigan, who had been reported missing Jan. 25 and was considered to be in extreme danger. Forensic testing confirmed her identity.
An autopsy determined Umbreit's manner of death was homicide. Authorities believe the killing occurred in Michigan and described the case as an isolated incident.
The investigation remains ongoing and involves multiple agencies from both Indiana and Michigan, including state police and local departments from each state.
