(COLDWATER) - Coldwater City Council members introduced two ordinances at Monday's meeting that would raise parking violation fines for the first time in three decades.

The proposals would clarify and increase penalties for both front-yard parking and overnight on-street parking. Current fines are $5 for front-yard violations and $10 for parking on streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Public Safety Director Joe Scheid is recommending a uniform $25 fine, citing ongoing problems with repeat offenders.

One ordinance would amend the city's Uniform Traffic Code related to front-yard parking. At least one resident voiced opposition during the meeting.

The council is expected to take formal action March 9. If approved, the new fines would take effect 21 days after publication.
