(MICHIGAN)- Police across Michigan will step up enforcement this March targeting drivers who fail to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and roadside crews.
Local Michigan police and sheriff's departments will take part in the statewide "Move Over or Get Pulled Over" campaign aimed at protecting first responders, tow truck operators and maintenance workers.
State law requires motorists to slow to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit and, when safe, move over one lane when approaching any stationary vehicle displaying flashing or rotating lights.
Officers will conduct high-visibility patrols throughout the month as authorities warn of increasing injuries and fatalities involving roadside workers.
Violations carry a $400 fine and two points on a driver's license. If a driver's actions cause injury or death, charges can rise to a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Officials urge drivers to stay alert and give emergency personnel the space needed to work safely.
