(NOBLESVILLE) - Health officials in Hamilton County are urging residents to check their measles vaccination status as cases of the virus increase across the United States.

The Hamilton County Health Department issued the reminder as many families prepare for Spring Break travel.

Officials say nearly 1,000 measles cases have been confirmed across 26 states so far in 2026, including states neighboring Indiana.

Health officials say measles is one of the most contagious viruses and warn that travel through crowded locations such as airports and vacation destinations can increase the risk of exposure.

The department says the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine remains the primary protection against the virus. One dose provides about 93 to 95 percent protection, while two doses provide about 97 percent protection.

Health officials say it can take two to three weeks after vaccination for the body to build maximum protection.

Indiana residents who are unsure of their vaccination status can check their immunization records through the MyVaxIndiana portal at in.gov.
