(COLDWATER) - The Branch County Sheriff's Office is seeking volunteers to join its Victim Services Unit, a nonprofit group that provides immediate support to residents during emergencies.
The unit assists people affected by fires, accidents, and natural disasters, allowing first responders to focus on the scene while volunteers help families and coordinate with organizations such as the Red Cross and United Way.
Operating out of a retrofitted ambulance stocked with emergency supplies and comfort items, the team has played a key role in recent recovery efforts, including cleanup following the Union City tornado.
Sheriff Fred Blankenship says the program depends entirely on unpaid volunteers who can offer a calm and supportive presence during crisis situations.
New volunteers complete a six-month mentoring period, followed by three days of specialized training through the Michigan Sheriffs' Association.
Applications are available at the Sheriff's Office, 379 Keith Wilhelm Drive in Coldwater. Those interested can also call (517) 278-2325 for more information or to support the program through donations.
