(LANSING) - Michigan's Gun Violence Prevention Task Force is calling for sweeping changes to the state's firearm laws, including banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, raising the minimum firearm purchase age to 21, and closing a concealed-carry loophole. The 11-member panel released 39 recommendations aimed at reducing firearm deaths and treating gun violence as a public health issue. The proposals also target "ghost guns," bump stocks, and Glock switches, while calling for stronger enforcement of the state's red flag law, expanded access to safe-storage tools, and a statewide school safety tip line. Some of the recommendations could face pushback in the Republican-led state House, where critics argue the measures go too far. Supporters say the proposals focus on improving public safety and preventing suicides. The task force includes law enforcement, mental-health advocates, and firearm injury experts.
