(ANGOLA) - Student-created apps focused on recycling, shared laundry spaces, and running shoes took top honors during Trine University's annual Storm Tank competition.

The competition was held March 25th and featured 17 project ideas from Trine students. The top 10 teams advanced to final presentations inside the Mark and Sarah Music / Ruoff Mortgage Esports Arena.

Cash prizes for the competition were funded through a gift from Farmers State Bank.

First place and a $2,000 prize went to Abigail Hansen, a chemical engineering major from Frankfort, Illinois.

Her project, called ReCraft, is a mobile app designed to help users identify how to recycle items in their local communities by scanning them with a phone. The app also includes community recycling challenges and rewards.

The second-place team received $1,500 for LaundrySync, an app designed to help users reserve washers and dryers in shared laundry facilities and track remaining laundry times.

The team included Adison Hildebrand of Berrien Springs, Michigan; Annika Schrock of Goshen; Elliott Baker of North Manchester; and Lilliana Gonzales of Fort Wayne.

Third place and a $1,000 prize went to Piper Barker of Evansville for a Running Shoe Recommender app designed to help runners and walkers select shoes based on factors including mileage, arch type, cushioning preferences, and budget.
