(LAGRANGE COUNTY) - Authorities have identified a 16-year-old boy who died Sunday after going missing in Witmer Lake.

The LaGrange County Coroner's Office identified the teen as Jalen Bontrager.

According to authorities, Bontrager was last seen Sunday evening after jumping from a boat into the lake without a life jacket. Emergency crews responded and began searching the area while the LaGrange County Sheriff's Office asked boaters to stay off the lake during the operation.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources divers recovered Bontrager's body about three hours later.

The DNR said Witmer Lake has a maximum depth of 54 feet. Officials estimated the area where Bontrager disappeared was about 20 feet deep.

The LaGrange County Coroner's Office said the death appears to be a drowning. An autopsy and toxicology testing will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Witmer Lake is located northwest of Wolcottville near the Noble County line.
