Red Cross Urges Blood, Platelet Donations As Summer Shortage Looms

(FORT WAYNE) - The American Red Cross is urging donors to give blood or platelets as donations continue to lag behind seasonal demand.

The organization says blood donations are down about 25,000 units nationwide over the past several weeks, raising concerns about maintaining an adequate supply heading into the busy summer months.

Summer is traditionally one of the most challenging times of the year for blood collection. Schools are out of session, regular donors are traveling and severe weather can force blood drive cancellations.

The Red Cross says Type O blood donors are especially needed because their blood can be used in emergency situations when there is no time to determine a patient's blood type.

Platelet donations are also in high demand. Platelets are used to help cancer patients, trauma victims and others facing serious medical conditions. Because platelets have a shelf life of only five days, hospitals require a steady supply from donors.

Eligible donors can schedule an appointment through the Red Cross website, the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

The Red Cross says every donation can help save multiple lives and is encouraging both regular donors and first-time donors to make an appointment this summer.
