(UNDATED) - Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio all rank in the top 20 among states where households spend the largest share of their income on fast food, according to a new study from WalletHub.

The study compared the cost of a hamburger, pizza and chicken sandwich in each state against median household income.

Indiana ranked 13th, with the cost of those fast-food purchases equaling 0.39 percent of a household's median monthly income.

Michigan ranked 15th and Ohio 16th.

Mississippi topped the list at 0.48 percent, followed by Arkansas and Louisiana at 0.44 percent.

Researchers said lower household incomes were a major factor in states ranking higher on the list, even when menu prices were similar to those elsewhere.

For the study, WalletHub assumed a household would purchase one hamburger, one pizza and one chicken sandwich each month and compared those costs to median household income figures.

The report also offered several ways consumers can reduce fast-food spending, including using restaurant apps for coupons, joining rewards programs, avoiding delivery fees and tracking food purchases through a monthly budget.
