(QUINCY) - The Quincy Police Department is reminding residents about village golf cart regulations following an increase in complaints involving underage and reckless drivers.

Police Chief Dalton Turmell said the department has received multiple complaints about individuals under the age of 16 operating golf carts dangerously on village streets.

Village regulations require golf cart operators to be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver's license. Operators must obey all traffic controls, travel on the right side of the roadway and stay off sidewalks.

Turmell also addressed ongoing issues involving golf carts traveling along U.S. 12.

Golf carts are prohibited from driving on or along U.S. 12 except when crossing at intersections to reach a village side street.

Village rules allow golf carts to operate only during daylight hours, from one-half hour after sunrise until one-half hour before sunset. Golf carts also may not exceed 15 miles per hour.

While village-operated golf carts do not require standard automobile registration or insurance, operators must comply with state signaling requirements and may not travel on roads with speed limits above 30 miles per hour.

Anyone with questions about golf cart regulations is encouraged to contact the Village of Quincy office at 517-639-9065.
