(LANSING) - Michigan House Democrats have introduced legislation that would cap insulin costs for insured patients at $35 per month.

The proposal would prohibit health insurers from charging more than $35 per month in copays or coinsurance for at least one covered insulin product. Lawmakers also included a provision that would allow the cap to be adjusted annually for inflation.

Supporters say the legislation is intended to reduce out-of-pocket costs and improve access to insulin for people managing diabetes.

The bill has been referred to the Michigan House Insurance Committee, where lawmakers will review the proposal and may hold hearings or consider amendments.

Before becoming law, the measure would need approval from the committee, the full Michigan House and Senate, and the governor.
