Indiana Unemployment Holds at 3.3 Percent in May

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana's unemployment rate remained below the national average in May.

New figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show the state's unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in May. The national unemployment rate for the same month was 4.3 percent.

Indiana's labor force participation rate was 63.2 percent, compared to the national rate of 61.8 percent. The labor force participation rate measures the percentage of people age 16 and older who are working or actively seeking employment.

Indiana's total labor force stood at 3,489,693 people in May.

Private-sector employment continued to grow during the month. Total private employment reached 2,843,000, an increase of 3,800 jobs from April.

Industries posting the largest job gains included:

• Construction: +1,800 jobs

• Leisure and Hospitality: +1,700 jobs

• Professional and Business Services: +1,500 jobs

• Trade, Transportation and Utilities: +500 jobs

• Manufacturing: +200 jobs

The state also reported 94,059 open job postings as of May 31.

Meanwhile, 19,068 continued unemployment insurance claims were filed during the week ending June 6.
