(INDIANA) - Indiana leaders are reacting after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled states can legally restrict girls' and women's sports teams based on biological sex.

The Court ruled 6-3 in cases involving laws in Idaho and West Virginia. The ruling found the policies do not violate the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause or Title IX.

The decision allows similar laws in roughly half the states, including Indiana, to remain in effect.

U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman said he supports the ruling, but believes there should be a nationwide standard.

"While the decisions of the states can decide whether they are in or out, I think that it would make sense for us to have a unified policy across the country to be sure that boys sports is for boys, girls sports is for girls," Stutzman said.

State Sen. Liz Brown also praised the ruling. Brown said it strengthens her plans to introduce what she calls a "biological truth" bill during the next legislative session.

Brown said the proposal would simplify Indiana law by creating consistent definitions related to biological sex, making existing laws easier to interpret and enforce.

The Indiana General Assembly is expected to reconvene in January.
