SPENCERVILLE, Ind. (WLKI)- A Garrett man working as a trash collector was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday in the 7800 block of County Road 68.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office identified the pedestrian as 44-year-old Troy Hanna of Garrett. Hanna suffered a broken leg and a laceration to the back of his head, according to the crash report.

Deputies were called to the scene after a report that a man had been hit by a vehicle. Deputies and the Spencerville Fire Department arrived and provided aid to Hanna, who was actively bleeding from his head.

Investigators determined Hanna was working for Washler Inc. as a trash collector. Authorities said he was attempting to cross the road from behind a garbage truck when he was struck.

The driver, Janice Kever, 76, of Harlan, was driving a 2012 Honda CR-V. She told deputies she did not see Hanna until after the collision. Kever was not injured.

Hanna was taken to the hospital for treatment. The Honda sustained more than $1,000 in damage.

Parkview EMS, Hicksville Rescue Squad, the Spencerville and Concord fire departments, and DeKalb County Central Communications assisted at the scene.
