Ohio Poised to Tighten Marijuana and Hemp Rules Under New Statewide Bill

(COLUMBUS) - Ohio lawmakers have approved a sweeping overhaul of the state's marijuana and hemp laws, passing Senate Bill 56, a measure that would sharply restrict intoxicating hemp products and tighten regulations on recreational cannabis. The bill now heads to Governor Mike DeWine, who is expected to sign it.

The legislation bans intoxicating hemp products outside licensed dispensaries, caps THC levels in adult-use extracts, limits recreational dispensaries to 400 statewide, and makes it illegal to bring marijuana purchased in other states back into Ohio.

The bill has drawn mixed reactions -- with some lawmakers arguing it undermines the voter-approved cannabis reforms passed under Issue 2, while supporters say it strengthens public safety and brings clarity to the marketplace.

Industry leaders praised the move, saying the updated rules close loopholes, support responsible sales, and unlock long-promised community funding tied to cannabis tax revenue.

If signed, Senate Bill 56 will mark one of the most significant updates to Ohio's cannabis laws since recreational use was approved by voters.
