(GRABILL) - An elderly woman has died following a water rescue Wednesday morning in Grabill. The Allen County Sheriff's Department says crews were called just before 7 a.m. to a frozen pond along Grabill Road after reports of a car in the water. Investigators say the woman was driving north on Roth Road when her vehicle left the roadway, crossed a field, and entered the pond, submerging the front end. Police say the woman was able to get out of the vehicle on her own before being pulled from the water by Northeast Fire and EMS crews. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The Fort Wayne Dive Team searched the pond beneath the ice and confirmed no other victims were involved. The woman's identity and official cause of death will be released by the Allen County Coroner's Office. The incident remains under investigation.
