(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed a lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Company, accusing the pharmaceutical giant of helping drive up insulin prices at the expense of Hoosiers.

Rokita alleges Lilly participated in a coordinated scheme with other insulin manufacturers and pharmacy benefit managers to artificially inflate insulin prices by more than 1,000%, despite relatively low production costs. The lawsuit seeks to lower prices, improve healthcare affordability, and hold companies accountable for alleged market manipulation.

"This action aims to drive structural market changes, provide relief to affected consumers, and ensure lasting accountability," Rokita said in a statement.

According to the Attorney General's Office, nearly 700,000 Hoosiers have been diagnosed with diabetes, with millions more considered pre-diabetic--making insulin affordability a critical public health issue in the state.

"Pharmaceutical companies should not take advantage of Hoosiers or any other American--this includes Lilly, regardless of its Indiana roots," Rokita said.

Indiana joins a growing list of states--including Texas, California, Minnesota, and Michigan--that have taken legal action against Lilly and other drug manufacturers over insulin pricing practices.

Eli Lilly recently became the first American pharmaceutical company valued at more than $1 trillion, underscoring the scale of the industry as states continue to challenge drug pricing models that affect millions of patients nationwide.
