(OVID TOWNSHIP) – Traffic was slowed down for a time Monday on northbound I-69 in Branch County’s Ovid Township.
The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation say a 48 foot cattle trailer caught fire at 8:15 AM as it was near the MDOT Weight Station.
The Coldwater and Lakeland Fire Departments were sent to the scene and extinguish the fire. According to Michigan State Police, there were 33 head of cattle on the trailer. One was injured in the fire and had to be put down by authorities.
Another trailer was brought to the scene to take the cattle on to their destination.
Investigators say the fire appears to have started because of an overheated rear axle and a flat tire.
