(LAGRANGE) – Two people were killed in a two vehicle crash just south of LaGrange.
LaGrange County Chief Deputy Sheriff Juan Arroyo says 77 year old Phillip Shirmeyer of Wolcottville was driving south on State Road 9 near County Road 200 South at 5:38 PM on July 3. For unknown reasons, Shirmeyer crossed the center line and went into the northbound lane, striking a vehicle head on that was driven by 62 year old Dean Weir of LaGrange.
Weir told deputies he tried to avoid the collision but was unable to do so.
Shirmeyer was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 70 year old Sandra Shirmeyer, was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, but died while in flight.
Weir was also flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center, and is in critical condition.
Assisting at the scene were the LaGrange and Wolcottville Police Departments, the Rome City Marshal’s Office and the Indiana State Police. The crash is still under investigation.
