(ANGOLA) - Gas prices across the United States jumped sharply overnight, according to new data from AAA.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose 11 cents to about $3.11 nationwide.

In Angola, some stations are selling gas at $3.26 per gallon Tuesday morning. The cheapest local gas on Tuesday morning, according to GasBuddy.com, was posted at $2.69 per gallon.

Prices had already been trending upward as refineries transition to summer fuel blends, but the increase accelerated after tensions escalated in the Middle East.

Oil prices surged following U.S. strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks. Benchmark U.S. crude rose 8.6% to $77.36 per barrel, while Brent crude climbed 6.7% to $81.29 per barrel, the highest levels seen in more than a year.

Analysts say global markets are reacting to concerns the conflict could disrupt the flow of oil supplies.
