(INDIANAPOLIS) - Health officials in Marion County are warning about a powerful new synthetic opioid that has been linked to overdoses across the Midwest.
The drug, known as cychlorphine, is described as significantly more potent than fentanyl, with officials warning even a microscopic amount can be deadly.
The Marion County Public Health Department says the substance is part of a newer class of synthetic opioids and may already be circulating in nearby states, including Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office says the region's location between Chicago and Louisville makes it important to stay alert, even though the drug has not yet been confirmed locally.
Officials say the drug presents added dangers for first responders. It may not show up on standard fentanyl test strips, and multiple doses of Narcan may be needed to reverse an overdose.
Cychlorphine has been found in powder form and has also been mixed into other illegal drugs or pressed into counterfeit pills made to resemble prescription medications.
Health officials are urging the public and first responders to be aware of the risks as the substance gains attention.
