(LANSING) -- Michigan agriculture officials are urging pet and livestock owners to take extra precautions against bird flu as spring migration ramps up.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says migrating wild birds increase the risk of spreading avian influenza, which thrives in cool, damp spring conditions.

Officials say the virus spreads easily through contact with wild birds, infected animals, contaminated equipment and even clothing.

Animal owners are being urged to keep pets and livestock away from wild birds, secure feed sources, limit visitors and disinfect boots, tools and gear.

The department also recommends washing hands frequently and allowing downtime between farm visits to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.

State officials say the risk to the general public remains low, but people should still handle meat and eggs safely and avoid consuming raw milk.

Suspected cases in animals should be reported to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
