(FORT WAYNE) - The Fort Wayne Zoo is introducing Sensory-Friendly Sundays as part of its "Zoo for All" initiative.

The program will be held on the first Sunday of each month and will feature a modified environment designed to reduce sensory stimulation. Adjustments include reduced ride noise, dimmed lighting, no music, and other changes.

Zoo officials say the effort is intended to create a more inclusive and welcoming experience for guests who benefit from a lower-stimulation setting.

The first Sensory-Friendly Sunday was held May 3.

The zoo says similar accommodations will also be incorporated into its "Glo Wild" lantern festival, including reduced flashing lights, less lantern movement, and no music. The event runs through October 4 during the 2026 season.

Officials note that while changes have been made, individual sensory needs can vary and some triggers may still be present.

In addition to the monthly events, the zoo says it offers sensory-friendly support daily. The facility is registered with KultureCity as a sensory-inclusive location and is also a Certified Autism Center through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards.

The zoo provides sensory bags at Guest Services, including items such as headphones and fidgets, and identifies quiet areas and headphone zones throughout the grounds.
