(INDIANA) - The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced its 2026 chip sealing schedule, with work set to begin on or after June 1 across northeast Indiana.

INDOT said crews will chip seal more than 300 lane miles this year.

During chip seal operations, existing pavement is coated with liquid asphalt to seal cracks and provide waterproof protection. INDOT said the process extends the service life of roadways and helps lower maintenance costs.

After the liquid asphalt is applied, aggregate is spread over the surface and excess material is swept away. Following a curing period, crews will return to fog seal the roadway and apply pavement markings.

Projects scheduled for June include:

INDOT said each section of roadway will be closed to through traffic for approximately four days while work is underway. Local traffic will still be allowed access and will be guided through work zones by a pilot car.

The work is weather-dependent and schedules may change.

INDOT is encouraging motorists to slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions when traveling through work zones.
