(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana teenagers will be able to obtain a driver's license on their 16th birthday beginning July 1 under a new state law signed by Governor Mike Braun.

The change is part of House Enrolled Act 1200, which lowers the minimum licensing age from 16 years and 90 days to 16 years old.

State officials said the requirements for obtaining a license will remain unchanged.

To receive a driver's license at age 16, applicants must pass the written knowledge test, hold an Indiana learner's permit for at least 180 days, complete a driver education program, submit a signed log of supervised driving hours, pass a vision screening and pass a driving test.

A parent, legal guardian or another qualified adult must also sign an agreement of financial liability and provide identification documents.

The new law also allows 16-year-olds to obtain a motorcycle endorsement if they meet all applicable requirements.

Governor Braun called the change a commonsense measure that gives families more flexibility while maintaining existing safety and training standards.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing licenses under the new age requirement on July 1.
