(ANGOLA) - A Fremont High School teacher has been recognized by Trine University for inspiring students to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering fields.

Trine University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented its annual Outstanding High School Teaching Award to Eric Wirick of Fremont High School.

The award recognizes exceptional dedication to encouraging students to pursue mathematics, science and engineering careers. It includes a $250 stipend and a commemorative plaque.

Wirick was nominated by Trine University software engineering major Zakeri Pica of Fremont.

Pica said Wirick's Digital Applications and Advanced Business Application classes helped develop his interest in problem-solving and data analysis.

Pica credited opportunities to work with classmates on troubleshooting issues in programs such as Microsoft Access and Excel for helping shape his academic interests, which later led him to pursue a software engineering degree and a minor in data science.

The award is presented annually by Trine University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
