(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Mike Braun has announced a series of proposed changes to Indiana's child care regulations that his administration says will reduce costs and expand access for families.

The proposed reforms would lower some qualification requirements for child care directors and lead caregivers, remove certain facility and administrative requirements, and give providers more flexibility in areas such as meals and sleeping arrangements.

State officials say the changes are intended to reduce operating costs for child care businesses while maintaining health and safety standards.

The Braun administration said the reforms could affect more than 2,800 child care providers serving over 110,000 children across Indiana.

Officials also said the changes are designed to encourage new child care businesses to enter the market and allow existing providers to expand capacity.

The proposed rules entered the public comment process Wednesday.
