(FORT WAYNE) - The Fort Wayne Zoo is preparing to welcome two North American bald eagles ahead of America's 250th birthday celebration.

The first eagle, Liberty, is expected to make his public debut in the coming weeks as a visiting species in the zoo's Australian Adventure exhibit. A second bald eagle, Spirit, is scheduled to arrive later this season.

Zoo officials said Liberty suffered injuries that prevent him from surviving in the wild. He will serve as an ambassador for the species, helping visitors learn about wildlife conservation and the recovery of bald eagle populations in the United States.

The zoo said Liberty is expected to make his first public appearance shortly before the nation's 250th birthday celebration on July 4.

One of the eagles has already arrived from another Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited facility. Both birds will undergo veterinary monitoring and quarantine procedures before being introduced to their habitat.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for July 1 to celebrate Liberty's arrival and highlight the conservation story of both birds.

Guests are encouraged to follow the Fort Wayne Zoo's website and social media channels for updates on Liberty's public debut.
