(ANGOLA) - The Steuben County Democratic Party has new leadership following the resignations of Chairman Ben Helmsing and Vice Chairwoman Amy Klingenberger.
Mary Jo Light was unanimously elected chairwoman during a July 7 meeting. Michael Miller was elected to serve in party leadership alongside her.
Light is a lifelong Steuben County resident and longtime Angola resident. A former area floral designer, she has served as president of the Indiana Teleflora Board, on the Indiana State Florist Association board and twice as chair of the Indiana State Florist's Convention. She also previously served on the Steuben County 4-H Fair Board and recently retired from the Angola CVS.
Light will continue serving as precinct chair for Steuben 1.
"I believe in working with all those who desire a better future for the people of Indiana," Light said. "I want to bring people together across our differences to create a more equitable and hopeful tomorrow."
Miller is a Steuben County resident and regional compliance and safety manager with Airgas Welding and Industrial Equipment. He has previously served on the boards of the Steuben Lakes Regional Waste District and Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County and is now a candidate for the Pleasant Township Board.
The new leadership plans to focus on supporting Democratic candidates and reaching younger voters and others the party hopes to engage ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm election.
Steuben County Democrats also plan to participate in several area parades and have booths at Summer Fest and Trine Fest.
The party's next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday in downstairs meeting room No. 1 at the Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County in Angola. The meeting is open to the public.
