INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI) - Indiana has launched a new text-messaging service to help residents affected by recent severe storms and flooding find disaster-recovery resources in their communities.
Residents can text IN211HELP to 898-211 to begin using the free 24-hour service.
According to Gov. Mike Braun's office, the automated system will ask users to enter their ZIP code and choose the type of assistance they need.
The system will then send information about disaster-specific resources available in the user's area.
"Hoosiers impacted by these storms are focused on taking care of their families, their homes and their communities, and they shouldn't have to spend hours searching for the help they need," Braun said.
Braun said the service will place recovery information directly into residents' hands as communities continue cleaning up and rebuilding.
After sending the initial text, users will receive a menu of available assistance categories. Some selections may produce an additional menu with more specific types of resources.
Once the prompts are completed, Indiana 211 will send each matching resource available within the user's ZIP code.
Residents can text IN211HELP again to restart the process and search for a different type of assistance.
Indiana 211 has been connecting residents with community organizations and government programs throughout the state's storm response.
The new service is intended to make those resources easier to locate, particularly for residents who may have limited internet access or difficulty navigating multiple agency websites.
People who need additional help can call 211 or visit IN211.org.
The Indiana 211 website allows residents to search for community disaster resources and complete a Disaster Damage Reporting Form.
Residents can also use the website to apply for assistance through the State Disaster Relief Fund or Military Family Relief Fund.
The site connects users with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Disaster Recovery Hub, which provides information about available state, federal and local assistance programs.
Indiana officials are encouraging residents to report damage even if they do not immediately need financial assistance. Damage reports can help emergency-management agencies document the extent of a disaster and determine whether additional aid may be available.
The texting service is available 24 hours a day. Standard messaging and data rates may apply depending on the user's cellphone plan.
Users can text STOP to opt out of the service or HELP for additional instructions.
