INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI) - Governor Mike Braun has extended the suspension of Indiana's gasoline usage tax and gasoline excise tax through October 6.
The extension continues the governor's energy emergency order, which took effect August 7. The tax suspensions apply in all 92 Indiana counties.
Braun says the action is intended to provide additional relief for Hoosiers facing high fuel costs. The governor first suspended the gasoline usage tax in April and expanded the relief in May to include the gasoline excise tax.
He says the state will use reserve funding to replace lost tax revenue and keep state and local infrastructure projects funded.
Braun says he will reevaluate the need for another extension in 30 days. The energy emergency gives the governor a 120-day period of authority.
The governor says he has reached an agreement with House and Senate fiscal leaders to prioritize reserve funds during the 2027 budget session to support road projects and maintenance. Indiana's reserve balance is projected to exceed $5 billion.
Indiana's lower gas prices have also drawn motorists from nearby states, particularly in border counties including DeKalb, LaGrange and Steuben, according to the Herald Republican.
