INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI)- Indiana State Police troopers conducted more than 36,000 traffic stops statewide in September as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities on Indiana roadways.

The Indiana State Police Enforcement Bureau reported 36,763 traffic stops during the month. Those stops resulted in 16,865 citations and 29,282 warnings.

Troopers also made 293 drunk-driving arrests, along with 1,298 traffic-related criminal arrests and 823 non-traffic-related criminal arrests.

State Police issued 1,746 seat belt citations and 271 distracted driving citations during the month.

Troopers investigated 1,185 crashes in September, including 175 personal-injury crashes and three fatal crashes.

The agency said troopers also routinely assist motorists experiencing mechanical issues, flat tires, vehicles stuck off the roadway or vehicles that have run out of fuel. State Police reported assisting 2,322 motorists on Indiana roadways during August.

The department says enforcement may involve aviation assets, dedicated patrols, motorcycle patrols, marked and unmarked vehicles and other specialized patrol efforts.

According to Indiana State Police, the purpose of those efforts is voluntary compliance with traffic laws and safer travel for everyone on the road. Residents are encouraged to call 911 to report suspected illegal or dangerous activity on Indiana roadways.
