MERRILLVILLE, IN (WLKI)- NiSource Inc. says it plans to return $57.5 million in savings to existing NIPSCO electric customers through bill credits connected to data center development in northern Indiana.

The proposal is subject to regulatory approval. If approved, the average residential electric customer would receive a credit of about $5 per month for 18 months, beginning approximately 30 days after approval.

NiSource said the credit is an early example of its Generation Company, or GenCo, model, which is intended to allow large electricity users to pay for the infrastructure needed to serve their facilities while sharing some resulting revenue with existing customers.

The company said the new credit builds on an estimated $1.75 billion in customer credits tied to previously announced agreements with Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft.

NIPSCO customers are expected to begin receiving the first of those previously announced credits during the first quarter of 2027, with the value increasing over time.

NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi said the company wants existing customers to share in the economic benefits created by regional growth.

The company said customers can learn more about its affordability efforts through NIPSCO's website.
