ANGOLA, Ind. (WLKI)- Pokagon State Park's toboggan run will open for the 2026-2027 season at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27.

The winter attraction draws more than 90,000 riders annually, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Its quarter-mile refrigerated tracks feature a 90-foot vertical drop, with speeds reaching 42 mph.

Regular operating hours will be Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Feb. 28. Additional operating days are scheduled during winter break, Dec. 19 through Jan. 3, except Christmas Day. The run also will open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, and Presidents Day, Feb. 15.

Toboggans cost $20 per hour and hold a maximum of four people. Rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must use park-provided toboggans, and a driver's license or state-issued identification is required as a deposit for up to two rentals.

Gloves are required for every rider. There is no age limit, but children must be able to understand and follow the rules. Cameras and video equipment are prohibited on the ride.

Because the track is refrigerated, snow is unnecessary for operation. However, the run closes when the air temperature at the track reaches zero degrees or below and remains closed until temperatures rise.

Restrooms and concessions will be available in the Warming Center, although there will be no indoor gathering space. Visitors bringing food may eat at the outdoor picnic tables.

Civilian Conservation Corps workers built the original track in 1935 for their own recreation. It opened to the public in 1938 and has undergone several upgrades.

Pokagon also will host two programs Nov. 27 as part of Indiana State Parks' OptOutside activities. A Spring Shelter open house runs from 2 to 3 p.m., offering information about the structure's construction and restoration.

The Friends of Pokagon will host a lantern-lit walk at the Nature Center from 7 to 8 p.m. The three-quarter-mile walk will include a fire afterward, with hot chocolate and cookies available for suggested donations.

Regular park admission is $7 per Indiana vehicle and $15 per out-of-state vehicle. Admission for visitors arriving by bus is $2 per person.

Pokagon State Park is at 450 Lane 100 Lake James near Angola. Additional information about the attraction is available at tobogganrun.com.
