(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana State Senator Liz Brown will no longer lead the Indiana Senate's Judiciary Committee following a split among Republicans over a proposed redistricting plan.

Senate leaders removed Brown from the chair position late Tuesday, about two weeks after Republican senators rejected a congressional redistricting plan supported by President Donald Trump.

Brown strongly backed the proposal, which failed on a 31-19 vote. The day after the vote, she stepped down from another Republican leadership role in protest.

Brown said Senate President Pro-Tem Rodric Bray informed her of the decision to remove her as Judiciary chair. She said tensions remain within the Republican caucus following the redistricting debate.

The Judiciary Committee plays a key role in shaping state laws, including immigration and legal policy. Brown currently sponsors an immigration bill that has drawn attention and disagreement from other state leaders.

Bray's office did not publicly explain the decision.

Sen. Cyndi Carrasco, a Republican from Indianapolis, will take over as Judiciary Committee chair when lawmakers return to the Statehouse in January. Carrasco supported the redistricting plan and has served in the Senate for three years.

Brown is also facing a primary election challenge for her Senate seat.

No other Senate Republicans lost leadership positions following the redistricting vote.
