Accidental Shooting Injures Man in Mendon Township

(MENDON TOWNSHIP, MI) - The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting that injured a man Saturday in Mendon Township.

According to a news release, a 46-year-old man was placing a loaded pistol into a gun safe at a residence in the 24000 block of Pinhook Road when the firearm fell to the ground and discharged a single round. The bullet struck the man in the abdomen, and authorities say there was no exit wound.

The man was able to call 911 and apply pressure to the injury until emergency crews arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was alert and conscious upon arrival and immediately taken into surgery.

Officials say the man is currently listed in stable condition and expected to recover. No other individuals were involved, and investigators say there is no danger to the public.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Mendon Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and LifeCare Ambulance.
